Contribute to a greener planet!

What is your carbon footprint?

All of your daily activities emit greenhouse gases. Your food, your transportation, the heating of your house, taking a shower, watching tv, buying clothes, every single one of your lifestyle choices contributes to the production of these gases, most commonly expressed in kilos of carbon, or CO2.

This CO2 is absorbed in the atmosphere and causes an increase in the temperature on Earth, also known as “global warming”, a big threat to all life on the planet.

The first step in the fight against global warming is to reduce your carbon footprint as much as possible. Next to reducing the amount of CO2 you emit, you can join our carbon offset project.

Trees, bamboo and oceans act as ‘carbon sinks’, places where CO2 is stored, instead of released into the atmosphere.

By planting bamboo you directly contribute to the absorption of carbon and the fight against global warming.

How big is your carbon footprint?

Your carbon footprint highly depends on your lifestyle choices. Do you drive a car? Do you take the plane? Do you eat meat, and if so, how much? How many clothes do you buy each year?

On average, each person on this planet emits 3,4 tons (3.400 kilos) of carbon per year.

The distribution is very unequal though. In The Netherlands, where Bamboo Village Uganda was founded, for example, this amount is thrice as high, 10 tons (10.000 kilos).

This is how lifestyle choices impact the planet:

1 kilo of steak (beef): 34 kilos of carbon
3 pairs of jeans: 100 kilos of carbon
1 year of showering: 200 kilos of CO2
4545 km by car: 1000 kilos of carbon
Return flight Amsterdam - Bangkok: 2.700 kilos of carbon

How does planting bamboo help to fight climate change?

Bamboo acts as a natural carbon sink: a reservoir that accumulates and stores the CO2 that is emitted by our daily activities.

Bamboo can grow incredibly fast, which makes it an affordable and attractive solution for carbon footprint offsetting. Depending on the specie planted (there are over 1000 variations of bamboo), bamboo can grow up to 91 centimeters per day!

On average, every square meter of bamboo at Bamboo Village Uganda can absorb 267,2 kilos of CO2. With only 4 square meters you can offset more than a tonne (1.000 kilos!) of carbon.

We created “ready to grow” packages of 5 square meters, 10 square meters and 12,72 square meters, to make it easy to offset.

Do you prefer to calculate the footprint before you offset? We’ve got you covered with our CO2-calculator!

How can I offset?

Compensating for your carbon footprint is really easy. It takes just a couple of minutes.

Step 1: Calculate your carbon footprint

Calculate your carbon (CO2) emissions with our footprint calculator. No time to calculate? Choose one of our popular “ready to grow” packages to offset!

Step 2: Buy the desired amount of square meters of bamboo.

You can buy as many square meters as desired. We believe that every little bit helps, so no matter if you want to offset your entire carbon footprint or a part of it, you are welcome to join us!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate the amount of carbon your bamboo can offset?

To calculate the total amount of CO2 that is stored per hectare of bamboo grown on the plantation of Bamboo Village Uganda (BVU), a few steps need to be taken:

  • Calculating the current amount of carbon stored in the vegetation of the land.
  • Calculating the total amount of carbon to be stored in the future mature bamboo plantation.
  • Calculating the amount of carbon stored in durable product produced by the bamboo plantation.

The total carbon uptake of every square meter of bamboo in Bamboo Village Uganda is 267,2 kilos. On this page we explain in detail how we reach this number.

Does your offset project have the Gold Standard Certificate?

No, it doesn’t. We made a balanced and conscious choice not to apply for any certification. For us, the most important is that as many resources as possible reach Bamboo Village Uganda. By not participating in a certification programme, we can keep the cost of the compensation project lower, and therefore support more people in the village. It also enables consumers and companies to compensate for their carbon footprint at a more affordable price.
